Session Abstract
The AHA's production and publication of the Guidelines for Broadening the Definition of Historical Scholarship (2023) have prompted valuable discipline-wide and department-level conversations about how historians evaluate and situate their own work and the work of their peers. The Guidelines encourage departments to consider and credit the broad range of scholarly activities in which historians apply their expertise and offer ideas about evaluating work for which a traditional peer review process is not readily apparent or absent. This session will discuss how programs have engaged with the Guidelines at the department level, with particular emphasis on information current and prospective tenure track faculty should consider as they shape their own scholarly agenda.
