Matthew Bowser will discuss global histories of genocide within the framework of decolonization. He traces the globalization of ethnonationalism across decolonizing Asia after World War II as the postimperial order emerged. In the context of the racialized consequences of capitalist extractive practices across the British Empire, indigenous communal parties and imperialists both prioritized containing the socialist/communist alternative over unifying nation-building, resulting in explosions of ethnic and religious violence that continue to escalate to the present day.
