Session Abstract
The Professional Division of the AHA recently conducted an anonymous survey to collect information about the working conditions of historians employed as contingent faculty. We had three main goals: 1) collect quantitative and qualitative data that will document the range of statuses, remuneration, and professional treatment of contingent historians in the academy, 2) frame a conversation about improving labor conditions for historians in the academy, and 3) most importantly, to provide individual historians with the data they need to make employment decisions, negotiate contracts, and advocate for themselves and their colleagues. We propose a session at the 2026 Annual Meeting to share the results of this survey with our membership, share responses, and consider how we might package and present the data in ways that would serve the interests and needs of non-tenure track faculty historians.
