Caroline Elkins is Professor of History at Harvard. Her books include Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya; and a work that has been internationally recognized as outstanding and original, Legacy of Violence: A History of the British Empire. The latter book is sharply critical of British colonial administration, arguing that it energetically pursued state-sanctioned violence. Her comment will include an examination of the ways in which colonial policies and practices may inform present-day events in the Middle East.
