Bernard Wasserstein is Professor of History at the University of Chicago. His books include The British in Palestine; and Divided Jerusalem: The Struggle for the Holy City. His comment will include the controversy over Israeli rule in the West Bank and the enduring issue of Palestinian nationalism, not least the argument that at the critical point in 1967 the British along with the Middle Eastern states such as Egypt clearly failed, perhaps deliberately, to take into account the voice of "self-determination" of the Palestinians themselves.
