Session Abstract

Doctoral candidates contemplating careers beyond academia often question whether they have skills that will allow them to pivot from the professoriate to other careers. In fact, a PhD in History stimulates the development of any number of skills that employers beyond academia value. The challenge for graduate students in history is two-fold. First, graduate students need to identify and define the skills they have developed. Second, graduate students need to translate those skills into a language that resonates with employers. In this workshop, participants will learn how to: 1) identify skills gained from their PhD and/or postdoc training that are relevant to their fields of interest and 2) effectively communicate how the skills from a PhD and/or postdoc training are relevant and valuable to organizations in different industries. While this workshop is designed for current graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, it is also applicable to early career scholars and faculty in History.
