Session Abstract

This roundtable discussion brings together scholars of the early modern world to consider the challenges of perceiving and writing agency in an era of rapidly shifting and increasingly unequal global exchanges. Balancing micro and macro scales of analysis and bringing into relief the limitations of the written archive, speakers will discuss the loci of early modern agency and the pitfalls of writing about them across North-South divides. The panel asks questions about the possibility of overcoming the silences of the early global archive without overwriting the imbalances they document in the first place. Against the backdrop of the quickly evolving politics of the era’s historiography, this roundtable discussion will consider how skilled writers and researchers navigate the lacunae of the past and the pressures of the present to bring the complex and varied early modern world to life.
