Session Abstract

Community Colleges have a unique opportunity as open enrollment institutions to guide and assist students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are first-generation college students. With this in mind, we seek to provide an equitable learning experience grounded in inclusion and focused on validating the strengths that each student brings to the classroom. Community College faculty participating in “History Gateways,” a joint initiative of the American Historical Association and the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education, will share their progress from the past three years as they have redesigned their introductory History surveys. They will explain how they have worked to create a sense of belonging among students, close opportunity gaps, and improve retention. Specifically, they will demonstrate how they have used assessment, collaborative work, inquiry-based learning, oral history projects, local history exhibits, and High-Impact Practices to design an equity-driven learning experience for all students in a variety of modalities.
