As far as power regimes go there is no return of fascism. Populism first reached power in Latin America after 1945 as the post-war reformulation of fascism. In other words, populism is not fascism. I strongly argue against the reduction of the current “explosion” of populist movements and regimes to the concept of fascism. By recognizing but also by moving beyond important historical connections, I will present key contextual distinctions between fascism and populism.
