Joe Schmidt, New York City Department of Education
Trevor Getz, San Francisco State University
In this workshop we will look at the strategies that the New York Board of Education has developed to deploy a set of graphic histories in the 10th grade classroom, as well as similar approaches taken at the college level. We will explore graphic histories and novels with narratives that introduce single actors who influenced history and discuss ways of teaching the role that everyday people have in larger historical phenomenon. We will also explore how sequential art and text can help students to develop historical empathy.
