Session Abstract

This session honors Boubakar Barry, Professor Emeritus of History at the Université Cheikh-Anta Diop in Dakar, who has been selected as Honorary Foreign Member of the AHA for 2016. The topic of West African regional integration has been central to Prof. Barry’s work from his early research on resistance to slave trade in the Waalo Kingdom and from his early leadership in CODESRIA, the African institute for social science. More recently he has coordinated a United Nations project for national conferences and publications on regional integration in West Africa. Three distinguished scholars present papers on various challenges of integrating life across West African political borders—on a region-wide religious association of women in the Tijaniyya Sufi order, on the century-long political discourse on West African integration, and on the difficulties of facing the Ebola crisis across national boundaries. Professor Barry will provide commentary on the papers and will summarize progress toward regional unity in West Africa.
