The same features that make role-play assignments pedagogically beneficial – students’ ability to create individualized characters, the unpredictability of those characters’ development – also make grading them a time-intensive challenge. Elizabeth Heineman will discuss the ways she’s adapted the assignment to keep it manageable as her class in 20th-century Germany has grown into a large lecture course.
