Reciprocal Research: Protocols and Guidelines for Conducting Native American Archival Research

This presentation will provide an overview of the research protocols and guidelines utilized in the “Race and Ethnicity in the American West” course, stemming from various publications including “The Protocols for Native American Archival Materials” and Devon A. Miheseuah’s edited work “Native and Academics: Research and Writing about American Indians.” Ms. O’Neal will examine the critical theoretical and historical implications when conducting Native American research and writing. Furthermore, she will also highlight the practical underpinnings of teaching undergraduates collaborative and reciprocal research, especially regarding source communities. Finally, Ms. O’Neal will discuss how the history project and student research interweaves the collection of primary source materials from multiple National Archives branches and non-tribal repositories and their digitial return to the Northern Paiute community.
