Scholarship in nuclear studies using statistical tools to test causal claims against large-n datasets has recently acquired prominence among political scientists. Its ability to provide guidance for policymakers, however, depends on the ability to demonstrate that the postulated causal mechanisms were operative in the relevant historical cases. This can only be achieved using historical research, making history the necessary link between theory and policy in nuclear studies.
