History, Social Studies, and the Break between “Research Men” and Teaching

Robert Townsend will describe the development of discrete professional identities for "research men" and history teachers. His paper surveys the diverging professional processes of the early twentieth century, which led toward different sets of idioms and practices, and ultimately toward separate organizations to represent their respective interests.
