Sites of Conscience

Thursday, January 3, 2013: 2:20 PM
Chamber Ballroom III (Roosevelt New Orleans)
Liz Sevcenko, Institute for the Study of Human Rights, Columbia University
Sevcenko will explore the origins and debates around "Sites of Conscience" and their relationship to justice.  She will discuss the varying definitions of and goals for justice in the societies where Sites of Conscience have emerged; and the diverse methodologies for activating places of memory to foster public engagement in each justice vision.  These include everything from facilitating dialogue across difference in divided societies, to promoting new public discussion of justice issues, to mobilizing communities to participate in direct actions.  Finally, Sevcenko will explore the possibilities and challenges of the Guantanamo Public Memory Project, an initiative launched by Sites of Conscience to build public awareness of the history of the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay.
