This paper examines changes in the residential landscape of suburban San Diego during the latter decades of the twentieth century.  From the 1960s suburban house of extension to the 1980s (to present) inward-looking house. changes in residential housing types reflect broader social, economic and political changes.  The paper will focus upon distinctly middle-class 2,000 square foot-plus house types, built in the neighborhoods of Escondido, on the suburban periphery of San Diego.
