“Teaching World History through Music.” Music can be a valuable tool in the classroom. Whether one is teaching regional, national, or world history, there are many ways of approaching music as a “window” into the history and culture of peoples and nations, such as in terms of migration. This presentation discusses significant musical forms and instruments from Africa, Europe, and the Mexican borderlands that reflect global interactions. Since students often express a strong interest in music, its use in the classroom provides an immediate link that instructors can readily relate to other topics of analysis.
