The Modern Girl Collaboration: Area Studies in Transnational Conversation

Our presentation will reflect on the Modern Girl Around the World collaboration which ran from 1999 to the publication of an edited volume in 2008. It began as a conversation between scholars grounded in "area studies" but evolved into a conversation about transnational theoretical categories, methodologies and temporalities. The challenges were at one level pragmatic and at another intellectually energizing.
