For the past two decades the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC, has functioned as a meeting ground for historians from both sides of the Atlantic. Beyond facilitating exchange it has been instrumental in setting research agendas and shaping the careers of young German and American scholars. This contribution will focus on the role and function of a German research institute abroad in a transatlantic perspective.
