Tour Leaders: Jessica Dauterive, Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, and Hannah Kreiger-Benson, Frenchmen Notes, will lead the walking tour; Laura DeFazio, Frenchmen Notes, and Ariety Fried, Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, will lead the community history event. Join us for a walking tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Frenchmen’s first modern music club, The Dream Palace, and explore the vital cultural corridor’s importance to New Orleans history. The tour concludes in DBA music club with a community history event where a band will perform and share stories about living and working as New Orleans musicians. Frenchmen Street is in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood in the city’s 7th Ward, known for its rich history of musical, cultural, and political leaders. In 1971, the Frenchmen area was designated as part of the Historic Marigny District and soon after began its development into a local music scene. As nearby Bourbon Street became increasingly geared toward tourists, music clubs in the two-and-a-half-block strip known as “Frenchmen” provided a new place where local musicians worked and experimented with musical genres and performance styles. Tour leaders work with Frenchmen Notes, a digital community archive that collects oral histories and cultural economy data that document the development of this pivotal scene—its complex history, heyday, and current state—for music fans, community members, and researchers alike. Please note: Participants will travel to the New Orleans Jazz museum by bus and then walk approximately four blocks on city sidewalks from the museum to the club; pavement may be uneven.
