Tour Leaders: Ashley Rogers, Whitney Plantation, and Ibrahima Seck, Whitney Plantation Whitney Plantation is a site of memory that educates the public about the history and legacies of slavery in the United States. First opened to the public in 2014, the museum has become well-known for its groundbreaking interpretation and dedication to truth-telling. St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, was once one of the densest plantation districts in the United States. Today, the same properties where plantations once stood are the sites of major petrochemical facilities. Activists call this region Cancer Alley. The drive to the museum will include a discussion of the environmental history of the River Parishes and the development of Cancer Alley by executive director Ashley Rogers. The tour of Whitney Plantation will explore the 270-year-old property through memorials and original buildings dating back to the 18th century. The guided tour of the plantation will be led by Ibrahima Seck, director of research for the museum and an expert on African cultures in Louisiana. Please note: This bus tour includes some walking. The Whitney Plantation Visitor Center is ADA compliant. Most of the tour is on a gravel path. Visitors should expect to walk and stand for 90 minutes. Manual wheelchairs may have difficulty navigating the grounds; motorized wheelchairs work better. Some of the historic structures are accessible only by stairs. Limit: 25 people. $50 members, $60 nonmembers.
