Tour leaders: Robert Ticknor, Libby Neidenbach, and Jari Honora, Historic New Orleans Collection This tour highlights original materials on free people of color in the collections of the Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC), a museum and research center in the French Quarter. Attendees will get an up-close look at important artifacts and documents not otherwise on view and learn about the unique and fascinating story of free people of color in New Orleans. The tour will highlight two recently acquired portraits by Louisiana’s first native-born portraitist, free man of color Julien Hudson. The presentation will explore the lasting contributions free people of color made to New Orleans as they developed their own institutions and built thriving communities in the pre-Civil War period. After the presentation, attendees will walk to 520 Royal Street for a self-guided tour of HNOC’s museum galleries. Current exhibitions include The History of the French Quarter Galleries; A Vanishing Bounty: Louisiana’s Coastal Environment and Culture; New Orleans Musicians in Art; American Revolution: The Augmented Exhibition; and Bunny Matthews: His Life, Art, and Obsessions. Please note: The group will walk approximately one mile on city sidewalks to 410 Chartres Street and 520 Royal Street; pavement may be uneven.
