Cicero dubbed Herodotus “the father of history,” while 19th-century “scientific” historians and today’s “realist” international relations scholars idealized Thucydides instead. Herodotus, however, delivered a vast, heterogenous archive, from which readers gleaned innovative methods for studying peoples with few documents. Scholars who kept reading Herodotus reaped the rewards.
