Session Abstract
While the impact of large-language models (LLMs) and generative-AI has been felt across the humanities, the small and intimate classrooms of small liberal arts colleges (SLACs) present unique challenges and opportunities. This panel brings together history faculty from SLACs to discuss institutional contexts, pressures, and diverse responses to the AI challenge in the history classroom, such as ways to incorporate AI in research and pedagogy or to reject AI completely by redesigning activities and assignments to foreground skills which AI cannot replace, or a combination of both. The session will also include an open forum on how we should think about the value of history education in an increasingly AI-saturated learning environment. Sponsored by the AHA’s Working Group on Small Liberal Arts Colleges, this workshop is part of a larger effort to build community among SLAC faculty and to create new venues for the discussion of issues facing historians at liberal arts colleges.
