Session Abstract
Small liberal arts colleges (SLACs) often pride themselves on a teacher-scholar model, where faculty are expected to excel at both teaching and scholarship. Moreover, they are encouraged to both teach classes related to their research and conduct scholarship informed by their teaching. For many historians, balancing these responsibilities and integrating insights from teaching in scholarly research is a daunting task. We welcome SLAC faculty who are hoping to explore strategies and techniques for realizing the teacher-scholar model in practice. Sponsored by the AHA’s Working Group on Small Liberal Arts Colleges, this workshop is part of a larger effort to build community among SLAC faculty and to create new venues for discussing issues facing historians at liberal arts colleges.
