Historians interested in connecting communities and constituents to the scattered and suppressed archives that document encounters with slavery, injustice, and incarceration are increasingly turning to digital methods and tools as a restorative medium. This roundtable features scholars who are central contibutors and founders of ambitious restorative projects: Kinfolkology, Million Dollar Hoods, and the U.S. Law & Race Initiative. Each will discuss the central methods and values shaping their approach to archival data collection and structuring, their commitments to community engagement and knowledge production, and their efforts to bring underexamined histories to a broader public. Panelists will invite the audience to consider restorative choices and practices regarding historical data that document violent and exploitative systems, but are also central to documenting survival and resistance. In addition to sharing these restorative and sometimes contentious practices, panelists will also invite the audience to consider opportunities to contribute to these efforts and adopt these strategies and projects in their own teaching and research.
