Artisans’ Silent Rebellion: The Case of the Lucknow Industrial School
The colonial state made very minimal provisions for education for artisanal castes. Prominent among these initiatives of transforming artisans and making traditional artisans relevant for modern technical jobs, the state opened artisanal industrial and technical schools. In this talk, Dr Kumar will discuss the case of the Lucknow Industrial School in North India and how artisan caste students responded to the colonial state’s essentialized industrial training and manual labor schemes. It also focuses on the colonial state’s efforts to bring traditionally non-artisanal castes into artisanal occupations through training programmes.
