When Neutrality Silences Inquiry: Teaching History in a Politicized Classroom

I provide a front-line perspective on teaching history in a polarized school district and will discuss the tensions of navigating a climate of intense political surveillance, where neutrality is often weaponized to silence student inquiry and avoid topics deemed "uncomfortable." However, while state mandates regulate a teacher’s speech and district protocols restrict us to pre-approved materials, they cannot control the rhetoric students bring into the room. I will address the specific challenge of "refereeing" the classroom when provocative national discourse filters into student discussion, requiring the instructor to maintain the boundaries of the discipline in real-time. I explore the sustained intellectual labor and professional precarity involved in defending the historical method, especially when the act of guiding students toward evidence-based inquiry has become a professional risk.
