Session Abstract

This interactive panel delves into the power of local histories in understanding and teaching social movements. Focusing on the documentary Punch 9 for Harold Washington, which chronicles the grassroots efforts leading to Chicago's first Black mayor, the session examines how such narratives can be integrated into educational settings. Additionally, the panel explores the Teaching the Chicago YLO Curriculum, a resource developed by educators, families, and community members to honor and reclaim the legacy of the Chicago Young Lords Organization.

Educators will share strategies for using these materials to engage students in critical discussions about political empowerment, racial justice, and community activism. The session will also highlight the importance of community partnerships in creating curricula that reflect and respect local histories. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in discussions and activities that demonstrate how local histories can inspire and inform social movements today.
