This immersive bus and walking tour will take participants through the heart of “Little Palestine” in the southwest Chicago suburbs. The tour explores how Little Palestine has been shaped by larger historical forces and mobilizations, both in the US and abroad, from the civil rights era to the war on terror. As we visit local grassroots organizations, a bakery, a grocer, a school, and a coffeehouse, the tour will explore intersecting histories of immigration, foreign policy, diasporic politics, and community organizing. Participants will hear stories from local leaders, educators, veterans, artists, elected officials, and ordinary people about the shifting history of Palestinian migration to the city; the struggles of building cultural, religious, and political institutions; and efforts to resist unjust policies and state surveillance at home and abroad. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how the people of Little Palestine transformed this corner of Chicagoland despite intergenerational displacement and dispossession, and wrote a chapter in the global history of the Palestinians.
Please note: The group will travel by bus, with some walking around the neighborhood. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase lunch at a local business during the tour.
