Session Abstract

Tour leaders: Fannie T. Rushing, Benedictine University and Carson Savoie, University of Louisiana

The Chicago SNCC History Project was created more than 20 years ago to preserve the history of the civil rights movement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and its imprint in Chicago for a new generation of social justice activists. The archive is housed in the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection of Afro-American History and Literature at Chicago Public Library's Carter G. Woodson Regional Library. Participants will learn about important sites of African American history, including the Wabash Street YMCA, where historian Carter G. Woodson founded what we now know as Black History Month. The tour concludes at Woodson Regional Library with a reception and curated display of selected materials from the Chicago SNCC History Project Archive, followed by a moderated discussion with former Freedom Rider, SNCC field secretary, and author of Mississippi’s Black Cotton, MacArthur Cotton, and former SNCC Field Secretary Freddie Greene Biddle. Professor Chris Danielson, author of the biography Brother Insider, Brother Outsider about the life of Lawrence Guyot, a key architect of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) , will also join the conversation.

Please note: The group will travel to the library by bus.

Limit 35 people. $50 members, $60 nonmembers.
