Session Abstract

Since 1974, National History Day (NHD) has been inspiring students to study history, learn about the past, and make connections to their own lives and times. Today, NHD reaches over 500,000 students every year who conduct historical research to discover the past, understand the present, and be the future. Tens of thousands of teachers expand their history knowledge–and NHD’s workshops, webinars, and professional development opportunities help them develop their teaching skills.

This panel features NHD Executive Director Cathy Gorn in conversation with an NHD student, the 2025 National History Day senior division Teacher of the Year, and the director of Chicago Metro History Day. The discussion will provide an overview of NHD and address how the organization supports educators, the power of independent research to inspire students, and why this work matters in our current civic climate.
