Session Abstract

History podcasting remains a fast-developing field of work both for historians and many students of history outside of the academy. Engaging storytelling, interview discussions, oral histories, and creative sound design all feature as innovative elements of this medium that together illustrate the potential of podcasts to deliver thoughtful and diverse historical content to a variety of audiences. The second annual Sinclair Workshop on Historical Podcasting explores this exciting field beginning with a panel discussion featuring history podcast practitioners representing a diversity of histories and podcast production roles. We’ll discuss big picture questions as well as practicals, all with the goal of helping attendees better understand the potentials of this work for presenting history to wider audiences and how one might go about getting started or going further. Topics covered may include an overview of the history podcasting landscape, technologies involved in podcast production, successful collaborations, expressing rigorous historical analysis through compelling storytelling, scriptwriting, overall production workflows, and more. Questions from attendees are very much welcome.
