Rhinelander Gallery North (New York Hilton, Second Floor)
Tour Leader: Sara Cedar Miller, Central Park Conservancy
Go beyond the well-trodden trails of Central Park to explore the 40-acre North Woods, the largest of the park’s wooded landscapes. The area includes the Blockhouse, a fortification built during the War of 1812 that is the oldest structure in the park. Learn how designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux incorporated the area’s existing dramatic topography; added trees and other vegetation; and designed new features such as water bodies, cascades, bridges, and a network of paths. Participants will tour the popular Harlem Meer in the northeast corner of Central Park, known for its scenic beauty and wealth of activities. The group will also learn about Seneca Village, a 19th-century community of predominantly African Americans, many of whom owned property there. The tour will conclude with a visit to the latest exhibit at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center describing preservation and restoration carried out by the Central Park Conservancy.
Please note: The group will travel by subway. The tour will involve walking several blocks over city streets and paved paths. The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center is ADA compliant.
Limit 20 people. $35 members, $45 nonmembers
