Session Abstract
How might teachers best integrate comics into their courses and syllabi? What are the latest innovations in non-fiction comics? What is the value of using comics to teach history and what pedagogical approaches work best with students engaging with graphic history? The theme of this “State of the Field for Busy Teachers” session is comics and graphic history from creation to classroom use. The session will engage in discussion of these questions and many other, as three experts in the field and educators engage in a discussion on latest historiographical interpretations, use of primary sources, and new publications to consider for use in the classroom. The first part of Graphic History a Panel on Panels session will feature brief (10 minute) remarks by three scholars who are create and teach with Graphic History: Trevor Getz (San Francisco State), Walter Greason (Macalester College), and Kay Sohini (Independent Scholar). The second part will be a moderated 45 minute discussion, led by a panel of teachers, who will invite the audience into a conversation about how graphic history and comics may realistically make it into packed curricula (and classrooms). We envision a lively exchange and will ensure ample time for audience Q&A in which all participants can walk away with new insights, resources, AND comics!
