Session Abstract

Arguing with Data-Driven History will engage historians in a critical examination of using data-driven methodologies in historical research, focusing on the opportunities and challenges this integration presents. It aims to discuss how data can uncover new narratives and amplify marginalized voices, enriching our understanding of the past. Participants will delve into the methodological challenges of interpreting vast datasets within historical contexts and the ethical implications of digital scholarship. Key considerations include the potential dehumanization and de-contextualization of historical subjects, privacy concerns, and the representation of underrepresented groups in historical datasets. The discussion will also address the risk of perpetuating biases through data-driven approaches, especially with incomplete or prejudiced datasets. The panel will explore strategies for historians to critically engage with their sources and methodologies, ensuring a balanced and respectful approach to digital historical research, seeking a balance between leveraging data for historical insights and navigating the ethical landscapes inherent in digital age scholarship.
