Session Abstract

This roundtable discussion will highlight recent efforts within cultural heritage institutions to help reshape institutional histories by improving public access to primary source records and including new voices in archival description and digitization. Archivists and librarians will share their experiences with efforts to reshape their institutions’ historical narratives, including projects to undertake reparative archival description, digitize new records, and otherwise widen access to institutional records. They will discuss the difficulties inherent in overhauling established institutional histories and how their institutions have (or have not) been successful in revising their public image, illustrating the varying experiences of this work across the country in private and public spheres as well as within and outside of the academic sphere.
