“History, Histories, and the Language of Republicanism, Reconsidered”

The Machiavellian Moment provided a sweeping analysis of republicanism as a language and political program, and a powerful demonstration of historical thinking as political thinking. Fifty years later, we should both recognize the significance of Pocock’s analysis and ask how this expansive vision of the republican paradigm has led to inclusionary – and exclusionary – visions of republics then and now.
