Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site interprets the legacy of American criminal justice reform, from the nation’s founding through to the present day, within the long-abandoned cellblocks of the nation’s most historic prison. Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, Eastern State was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of prisoners. The tour highlights Eastern State’s 142-year history, revolutionary and influential architecture, and stories of people who lived and worked in the building while setting the stage for conversations about criminal justice reform today.
Please note: The tour route meets most ADA guidelines, but some areas of the historic property are not accessible. See easternstate.org/access for details. Terrain in the indoor and outdoor spaces can occasionally be uneven. The building is not climate controlled, so please dress for the weather.
