Session Abstract
What should American schoolchildren be taught about their nation’s history? Against the backdrop of recent conflagrations over secondary American history curricula, researchers with the AHA are mapping the distinct political and administrative contexts in which Americans–state functionaries, consultants, curriculum developers, history educators, and the broader public–actually produce their answers to this question. This paper session presents a progress report on the American Historical Association’s Mapping the Landscape of secondary US History Education project, sharing preliminary findings on the mix of legislative, bureaucratic, and nongovernmental inputs across fifty unique settings that give shape to curriculum standards in American history.
