Session Abstract

This roundtable will reflect on Michael Gomez’s Exchanging Our Country Marks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South. Published in 1998, it remains a foundational text in African diasporic history, a fulcrum that connects scholarship on African life and culture in the Americas to ongoing debates about the making and practice of diaspora. This roundtable will assess the book, its impact, and its place in the historiography, as well as think about future directions in the study of Africans in North America.
