Session Abstract

Discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion in history education at all levels has recently taken over the news cycle. It is a topic of intense debate among educators, politicians, and in communities across the country. This session seeks to provide a venue for open discussion of how we as instructors of history and college administrators with a history background define Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and how we implement those strategies in our teaching in an era of growing controversy around the idea. As many colleges are focusing on implementing more inclusive pedagogical practices, some states have limited faculties’ ability to teach about race and racism. Faculty and administrators from public and private colleges will discuss considerations of diversity when choosing content for courses and pedagogical tools used to teach history to a diverse population of students with varied backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.
