Session Abstract

This panel with interrogate the idea of archaeologists, missionaries, humanitarians, and businesspeople as “unlikely” actors in the expansion of American empire in the nineteenth century. The four papers will examine the commercial, religious, and scholarly motivations that propelled Americans abroad in these years as well as the degree to which they served as informal diplomats as they forged connections and founded new institutions in the Mediterranean and the Americas.
