In Their Image: Women Cartoonists and Global Feminism at the Turn of the 20th Century

“In Their Image” examines the lives of both prominent and nearly forgotten women cartoonists and illustrators from the turn of the twentieth century, plying their trade in a field largely dominated by men and at the same time advancing the cause of women’s rights. This paper will draw from the contemporary source material, including examples of the artists' evolving work. While the vast majority of these women worked and lived in the US, Canada, and Europe, they figured among the examples of pioneering ladies around the world. Their stories aid our understanding of how cartoons and cartoonists influenced and altered the march toward women’s political emancipation.
