This session offers you an opportunity to explore and articulate what you see as the challenges facing instructors in these courses, and to help establish the framework and aims of this project. We will discuss what students bring to the course, university pedagogical requirements, the role of introductory history courses in departmental and university requirements, and the particular challenges presented by teaching world history. Everyone is welcome to join this workshop.

Session Abstract

History for the 21st Century (“H/21”) is a collaborative project designed to enable college faculty to effectively introduce 21st century students to the study of history. The project encompasses both the reconceptualization of introductory history courses and materials to support those courses.

H/21 is based at San Francisco State University and is supported by a 3-year grant from the Agentives Fund.

The discussion will be led by Trevor Getz, Project Director and Steve Harris, Project Coordinator, who will present the Project and describe its status as of the end of 2019. They will ask the audience to address the issues teachers face in introducing history at the college level and how they respond to the H/21 approach; including 1) the nature of student's preparation, understanding, and goals for taking introductory history courses, 2) university pedagogical requirements, 3) the role of introductory history courses in departmental and university requirements, and 4) the particular challenges presented by teaching world history.
