Session Abstract

On August 20, 2018, activists brought down “Silent Sam,” a Confederate monument that stood at the entrance of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus for over 100 years. This panel will address the historical context of the statue along with the local- and campus-based organizing that led to the monument’s removal. Panelists will discuss the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow at the University of North Carolina and how this history drove the movement against “Silent Sam.” They will also reflect on the aftermath of the statue's removal. The panel will include the perspectives of scholars who have researched and taught about "Silent Sam" and the voices of scholar activists who have participated in the campaign to remove the statue.
