Ronit Bezalel, filmmaker (Ronitfilms, 2016)

70 Acres in Chicago analyzes the contentious transition of Cabrini Green public housing development from the 1940s to its destruction and redevelopment beginning in 1995. Initially hailed as a public housing triumph, Cabrini Green was later demonized as an urban disaster. The mainly black residents of Cabrini were forced out or moved into a highly regulated mixed income community where they had to negotiate an unwelcoming cultural territory. Through personal stories, expert commentary, and informative history, the film celebrates the spirit of a unique community and mourns its betrayal and destruction.

D. Bradford Hunt, Newberry Library; Ronit Bazalel, director; and Raymond McDonald, resident, will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.
