Session Abstract

In early 2018, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded eight planning grants to “develop technical and human infrastructures to support the digital publication of documentary and scholarly editions and to provide for their long-term preservation, discovery, and use.” Motivated by the need for lowering the hurdles to production for future projects and allowing more integrated access for users, this roundtable discussion brings together members of four publishing cooperatives to discuss the challenges of and opportunities for advancing digital editing, innovative technologies, sustainability strategies, and increased accessibility and engagement. Additionally, as the projects represented on the roundtable are uniquely focused on working with historical manuscripts and datasets, the roundtable participants will explore how these cooperatives will benefit the fields of history and digital humanities.
