AHA Session 193
Saturday, January 5, 2019: 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
Continental A (Hilton Chicago, Lobby Level)
Chair:
Brett Rushforth, University of Oregon

Session Abstract

The rights of subjects, the debasement of slavery, and indeed the ability to hold positions of power, connected to ideas about loyalty in European empires in the Americas. Crossing imperial boundaries, this panel explores how allegiance to a king or country--could differentiate status and rights claims in different new world provinces/regions/colonies, and how the debate changed over time.
